Dr. Kewei Yu, MD, Ph.D. is a fellowship trained and board certified Interventional Pain Management Specialist at Spine Institute of Central Florida. Dr. Yu completed medical school at the Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China. He then completed a combined Orthopaedic Residency/PhD Program at the prestigious Chang Zheng Hospital of Second Military Medical University in Shanghai. Following his training, Dr. Yu practiced as a successful spine surgeon in China.
Dr. Yu later completed post-doctoral Fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He then did a subsequent post-doctoral Fellowship at Yale University’s Department of Neurology in New Haven, Connecticut where he focused on the field of pain management.
Dr. Yu continued his expansive medical training focused on advanced pain reduction treatments and interventions by completing an Anesthesiology Residency at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he underwent extensive Chronic Pain Management Training. Following his Anesthesiology Residency, he embarked on an additional Residency, and completed a comprehensive Neurology Residency at the University of Florida. He is a board certified Neurologist.
Following an Orthopaedic Surgery residency, practicing as a spine surgeon, Anesthesiology residency, Neurology residency, practicing as a Neurologist, Dr. Yu was then selected to complete a highly sought after Interventional Pain Management Fellowship at the Alabama Orthopaedic Spine and Sports Medicine Associates in Birmingham, Alabama. Saying that Dr. Yu is highly and extensively trained is an understatement.
Dr. Yu has expertise in all aspects of Chronic Pain Management, from accurate diagnosis to development of comprehensive treatment plans that identifies the actual pain generator. He shares the goal and mission of Spine Institute of Central Florida, of helping patients resume life free from pain. He is an expert in the most complex interventional procedures for treating pain including steroid injections, radiofrequency ablation, responsible use of medications, as well as minimally invasive procedures.
Due to his unique and robust medical training in both Neurology, Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Management, Dr. Yu is the area’s leading expert in the treatment of Simple and Complex Headaches & Migraine pain. Dr. Yu is the Director of Spine Institute of Central Florida’s Comprehensive Headache Center of Excellence. He along with his multidisciplinary team of renowned specialists including: Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and Doctors of Physical Therapy, have developed a state of the art treatment facility specializing in the management of headaches, facial pain, cranial neuralgias, and post traumatic headache pain. Dr. Yu leads Polk County’s ONLY comprehensive headache treatment center.
Dr. Yu remains active in research and has published extensively. He focused his postdoctoral research in studying the mechanism of neuropathic pain. He has presented his work around the country. He has extensively published numerous peer-reviewed publications on the diagnosis and treatment of all pain management conditions.
